RCA Visual Communication student, Mirry Stolzenberg, described her inspiration for this Christmas card design as being based on a personal Christmas experience: ‘A few years ago, an invitation to spend a snowy Christmas day with friends prompted me to take a cycle ride across London. Never before had I experienced the city in this way. Typically so cacophonous and frenetic, I was struck at how perfectly still it had become - how eerily silent. As I rode through the bleached out, empty streets, I imagined all kinds of colourful festivities taking place inside the illuminated households. It was that unusual sensation of sublime desolation that went on to inspire this Tate Christmas card design.'

Every year Tate invites students from the Royal College of Art’s School of Communication to submit designs to be printed in the Tate Christmas card selection. Now in its fifth year, we’ve selected nine designs from a record number of entries for their fresh approach to the theme of Christmas.
The competition was judged by Graphic Artist and RCA Professor Emeritus Andrzej Klimowski and Tate Enterprises product developers.
