Mini print of Alberto Giacometti’s Jean Genet 1954 or 55.
Genet was among the leading French writers of the twentieth century. Seeing himself as an outsider, he celebrated his homosexuality and criminal past in his work. He also wrote a short book on Giacometti. Like many of Giacometti’s portraits, this work uses a reduced palette of colours, and gradually builds its likeness of Genet with a series of small tentative brush strokes.
Alberto Giacometti (10 October 1901 – 11 January 1966) was a Swiss sculptor, painter, draughtsman and printmaker. He was born in the canton Graubünden's southerly alpine valley Val Bregaglia, the son of Giovanni Giacometti, a well-known post-Impressionist painter. Coming from an artistic background, he was interested in art from an early age. He is best known for his distinctive elongated figures, which are associated with the post-war climate of existentialist despair.
