Wadsworth Jarrell (1929) emerged on the Chicago art scene just as the Civil Rights Movement was rapidly escalating. He went on to produce work that reflected the sentiments of the liberation movement and influenced the visual identity of black culture. In 1968 he co-founded COBRA (Coalition of Black Revolutionary Artists), which was later renamed AFRICOBRA (African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists) in order to promote art as a propaganda tool.
