O’Keeffe’s work became more abstract when she moved to New York in 1918, inspired by the European modernist movement. She focused on form colour and composition and was also particularly interested in ‘the idea that music could be translated into something for the eye’. This painting is a beautiful example of these influences coupled with her interest in her natural world.

O’Keeffe made her debut in 1916 and was immediately recognised as a trailblazing artist, while today her legacy as an American art icon and a pioneer of twentieth-century art is widely recognised.

‘Men put me down as the best woman painter… I think I’m one of the best painters.’ Georgia O’Keeffe.
