Oil on canvas, 35.6 x 76.2 cm Donald Clifford Gallup Papers. Yale Collection of American Literature, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University. © 2016 Georgia O'Keeffe Museum/ DACS, London

O’Keeffe often made studies of the architecture in and around the places she lived throughout her life, ranging from the towering skyscrapers of New York, to the earth-built architecture of the abodes she stayed in in New Mexico. This painting is a beautiful example of a study of both her house at Ghost Ranch and the hills and mountains that inspired her so much in the background.

Georgia O’Keeffe is best known for her paintings of magnified flowers, animal skulls and New Mexico desert landscapes. O’Keeffe made her debut in 1916 and was immediately recognised as a trailblazing artist, while today her legacy as an American art icon and a pioneer of twentieth-century art is widely recognised.

‘Men put me down as the best woman painter… I think I’m one of the best painters.’ Georgia O’Keeffe.
