Kabazaiku is the regional craft of making products from wild cherry tree bark in Kakunodate, Japan. Originating from the 18th century, the craft has been used for making tea caddies and smoking boxes as well as brush handles, bows, and sheaths for swords. Passed down from masters to apprentices, the techniques are continually evolving.
The cherry bark caddy is an ideal storage vessel for tea leaves as it maintains a relatively constant moisture level, acting as an insulator against changes in humidity.
To clean, wipe with a soft dry cloth in the direction of the grain.
