This genuine leather clutch bag has the phrase ‘Art is a Guaranty of Sanity’ embossed on the front, taken from the artwork of the same name created in 1999 by Louise Bourgeois.
Packaged in a soft brushed cotton pouch, this clutch bag also features a removable leather hand strap and is lined with a red and white spiral design inspired by Bourgeois’s pattern work.
Louise Bourgeois was a renowned French-American artist and sculptor, best known for her contributions to both modern and contemporary art, and for her spider structures entitled Maman, one of which was on show for the opening of Tate Modern in 2000.
Bourgeois studied mathematics at the Sorbonne before turning to studio arts. In 1938, after marrying Robert Goldwater, an American art historian, critic and curator, she went to New York, where she enrolled in the Art Students League and studied painting for two years. During World War II she worked with Joan Miró, André Masson and other European expatriates.
Although Bourgeois exhibited with the Abstract Expressionists, she never became an abstract artist. Instead, she created symbolic objects and drawings expressing themes of loneliness and conflict, frustration and vulnerability.
