About the artist
About the artwork
Here we see Francis Bacon’s use of animals to evoke aggression, vulnerability or both. The image of the dog is derived from Edward Muybridge's time-lapse photographs of animals in motion. Bacon smeared the paint to suggest what seems to be demented movement.

About the artist
Born in Dublin in 1909, Francis Bacon was one of the most prominent British artists of the 20th century. His art was affected by many events of his life, from being thrown out of his home as a young man by his homophobic father, to losing a long time lover to suicide. His exhibitions saw international success and reinforced the perception that Bacon was the greatest British painter since J.M.W. Turner.
