Description
Poster of Běla Kolářová’s Untitled (Pattern of Shells), 1961, printed on fine art paper. This carefully reproduced image is available to celebrate the Shape of Light exhibition at Tate Modern.

Běla Kolářová (1923 – 2010) was a Czech artist and photographer. She was an important figure in Prague’s cultural community in the 1960s, during a time when the political and artistic ideology of the Soviet Union was being rejected, and new, avant-garde methods of expression were being explored. Kolářová invented a photography technique called the ‘artificial negative’, to push the boundaries of the medium even further - she pressed small objects into paraffin and wax and then onto small pieces of cellophane before exposing them to light, allowing them to develop naturally.

Shape of Light explores the relationship between abstract art and the invention of photography, with artworks from the 1910s to the present day showing the innovation and originality of photographers as they responded to and furthered the development of abstraction.

Dimensions: 70 x 50 cm. Giclée printed on Purcell Ultrasmooth 300gsm fine art paper in the UK, exclusively for Tate.
