    Have we become a society of voyeurs? The proliferation of camera phones, YouTube videos, satellite technology and reality television series would certainly suggest that this is so. If our capacity to look seems increasingly boundless, however, it also threatens to make us a nation under surveillance. The American modernist Man Ray (1890-1976) spent the 1920s and 1930s in Paris, where experimental expression was flourishing.

    Man Ray in Paris vividly demonstrates, through Erin C. Garcia's fascinating introduction as well as eighty-five black-and-white photographs, why Man Ray is still considered to be one of the most inventive and exciting artists of the twentieth century.

    American artist Man Ray (1890-1976) spent the most productive years of his career in Paris. While he considered himself a painter first and foremost, he also worked in a range of media including film, sculpture, and collage. However, it is for his achievements in the field of photography, from groundbreaking innovations to evocative, surrealist compositions and iconic portraits, that he is best known today.

    Man Ray arrived in Paris in 1921 full of creative energy. Inspired by Marcel Duchamp's readymades mundane objects that became works of art in the context of the gallery he created an assemblage by combining carpet tacks and an iron into a single work, which he later photographed and called Cadeau (Gift), 1921. Soon afterwards, he began to experiment with cameraless photography and devised his Rayographs, abstract images produced by placing objects directly on photographic paper and exposing the composition to light.

    Man Ray swiftly became an influential figure in the city's avant-garde circles. Through his wide-reaching connections he made striking portraits of the many artists and luminaries working in Paris at the time, including Pablo Picasso, James Joyce, Jean Cocteau, Joan Miró, and Gertrude Stein. His work also encouraged painters, including the Surrealists René Magritte and Salvador Dalí, to experiment with the medium. It could be argued that he did more than any other figure in the 20th century to elevate the photographic process from one of mere documentation to that of a fully-fledged art form in itself.

    Erin C. Garcia, a former assistant curator in the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum, is an independent curator in San Francisco. She is the author of Photography as Fiction.

    During the 1970s and 1980s the discourse surrounding aesthetics largely disappeared from the study of art history, theory, and cultural studies. Claims for the aesthetic value of artworks were thought elitist and politically regressive. The 1990s witnessed a return to aesthetics, but one that stressed the independent claims of beauty in reaction to its perceived suppression by ethical and political imperatives. Beauty, however, is just one aspect of the aesthetic. In recent years, increasing attention has been paid to the ways in which aesthetics and ethics are intertwined.

    Mitra Tabrizian: This is That Place

    Photographer and filmmaker Mitra Tabrizian was born in Tehran and lives and works in London. She has exhibited internationally and her films have been screened worldwide. Her large-scale photographs combine techniques more commonly utilised in documentary film-making to create elaborate, staged tableaux. Focusing on everyday, real-life situations, she invites local people to take part as actors, creating apparently realistic and mundane scenes. At the same time, the version of reality she presents is shot through with surreal detail and a strong allegorical content, commenting both on contemporary Iranian society and the universal human condition.

    While some of her work is set within Iran itself, other photographs and films follow the lives and struggles of those forced into exile. Recent work has become both more extreme in the situations it portrays and more highly polished in execution, and she depicts hope and determination as finally conquering despair.

    Gabriel Orozco was born in Veracruz in Mexico in 1962. Since the early 1990s, his career has been characterised by constant surprise and innovation.     Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904) is one of the most innovative and influential photographers of all time. Born in Britain, he emigrated to New York in his 20s, beginning his career as a photographer in San Francisco in 1867. Muybridge constantly pushed the limits of photography's possibilities, creating vast panoramas of the American landscape, inventing a method of projecting moving images that predated celluloid and documenting the young nation's rapidly growing cities. He is best known for his revolutionary series Animal Locomotion that inspired such key figures as Marcel Duchamp and Francis Bacon and continues to exert a strong fascination on contemporary artists today. Muybridge's extraordinary life encompassed several name changes (he was born Edward James Muggeridge), extensive international travel and even trial for murder. But as the essays by a selection of eminent critics featured in the book demonstrate, the details of his biography are less astonishing than the range and scope of his achievements in his chosen medium.     Born in 1946 in British Colombia, Canada, Jeff Wall has shown internationally for the last twenty-five years and is one of the most intriguing and influential artists working today. His signature works are large-scale narrative photographs in the form of backlit transparencies, mounted in light-boxes in the manner of advertisements at bus stops. Rather than advertising products, Wall's photographs celebrate moments of everyday life, often ones he has observed while driving around the streets of his native Vancouver and then re- created, using actors in the manner of a film-director.

    Trained as an art-historian, Wall draws on sources as varied as the old masters, nineteenth century history painting and the writings of Baudelaire for inspiration. One of his best-known images recreates Hokusais A Gust of Wind in a modern setting; another references Death of Sardanapulus by Eugène Delacroix. With their references to film, literature and the history of art, Wall's photographs repay close study. Six key works are examined in depth in this survey, with rich material from new interviews with the artist and an overview of his career to date.

    Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (b.1929) is arguably Japan's most famous living artist. Her originality, innovation and powerful desire to communicate have propelled her through a career that has spanned six decades.     Nam June Paik

    Nam June Paik (1932-2006) was one of the most innovative artists of the twentieth century, whose influence is still felt in music, the visual arts, film and video.

    Born in South Korea, Paik began his career as a composer in Japan and in Germany, where he met Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage and collaborated with Joseph Beuys. Moving to New York in 1964, he formed relationships with a number of artists associated with the Fluxus group, particularly the cellist Charlotte Moorman who became one of his closest collaborators. He continued to experiment in performance and video art, using manipulated televisions as elements in sculptural works, creating robot sculptures and installations.

    An international range of contributors trace the course of Paik's life and career, exploring his connections with key figures in the twentieth-century avant-garde, his theoretical writings and his lasting influence. Extensively illustrated, with extracts from interviews and reminiscences from many who were close to Paik during his lifetime, this will be the most thorough and illuminating exploration of Paik's legacy yet published.
