About the artwork
This is one of six portraits of Vallier, Cezanne’s gardener in Aix and is an example of Cezanne’s unique painting method. He captures both the shade of colour and its luminosity of each element with distinct overlapping brushstrokes. This method is a major influence in the evolvement of Cubism. This portrait is one of Cezanne’s last works as it was probably painted in the middle of 1906, not long before his death in October.

About the artist
Paul Cezanne was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1839. Although he is credited with profoundly influencing twentieth century art, recognition didn’t come until his last years. His early works, influenced by Delacroix and Manet were often rejected by the art world. Later in life, he was influenced by Pissarro. His palette began to brighten considerably and observed nature more closely. Although he is linked with the Impressionist movement, he sought to make 'something solid and enduring like the art of museums'. Cezanne died in Aix in 1906.
