Additional Information

Chris Ofili created, Siesta of the Soul, 2010, especially for Tate on the occasion of the major survey of the artist’s career at Tate Britain in 2010. Siesta of the Soul is a digital pigment print in a limited edition of 500 and is signed and numbered by the artist. It depicts Ofili’s poem of the same title::

A siesta of the soul elevating all that he is into invisible vapour, without sight, in flight.

The siesta of desire, a sleepwalk of fate tiptoeing on the chambers of his life force weightless past and breathless future. This spirit holds hands with his angel waiting to inhale his last dream of the lessons of the breeze.

Siesta, nemesis of gloom, slave of the sunset, mistress of the moonlight, insomnias fallen branch, shaded but not shrouded, summoning his dancing demons.

Prices of the artwork are liable to change. As a limited edition sells out, prices of the artwork are subject to increase and the price will be clearly indicated.

About the Artist

Chris Ofili (b. 1968, Manchester, UK) brings together painterly and cultural elements to play on ideas of beauty while carrying messages about black culture, history and exoticism. His work draws on a wide spectrum of sources including jazz and hip hop music, William Blake and Auguste Rodin. Ofili's recent works adopt simple, pared-down forms while continuing to be just as expansive, dramatic and romantic. He won the Turner Prize in 1998 and over the past two decades has exhibited in many international institutions. In 2003 he was selected to represent Britain at the 50th Venice Biennale. In 2017, Ofili was a recipient of Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE), awarded by the Queen. His work is in several permanent collections, including Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa and Victoria and Albert Museum, London. He currently lives and works in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
