During the 80s and 90s, Hockney undertook a large creative project based on the Grand Canyon. Describing it as ‘the biggest space you can look out over that has an edge’, the sheer expanse of three-dimensional space provided a thrilling challenge for the artist, and in a series of photographs and large-scale paintings Hockney set about exploring ways to capture this sense of vastness in just two dimensions. This particular piece from 1998 is composed of oil paints on nine smaller canvases, stitched together to form a large whole.
