After his return to England in 2005, David Hockney began to paint his experience of the East Yorkshire landscape, whose sense of open space he likened to the western US. The Woldgate Woods works were all painted from the same spot in the woods over the course of one year, and this particular work is comprised of six canvases joined together to make a whole, as a way of capturing the sense of expanse the woods provide. Hockney conveys the land and light in vibrant colour, bringing to the canvases his love of place, freshly observed and infused by decades of experience and the memories that it conjures of childhood days.
