    In 1849 the Illustrated London News published an exhibition review discussing the life and work of the hugely popular painter of apocalyptic landscapes, John Martin (1789 ¿1854). This, the artist claimed, was so unfortunate a tissue of errors from beginning to end that he felt compelled to write his own account, in order that it might supersede the unauthorised sketches of my life which have hitherto appeared.

    That account, the fullest autobiographical statement by the artist, is reprinted here in full, with an introduction and explanatory notes by Martin Myrone. This key document offers a fascinating insight into Martin's extraordinary career and the fraught politics of a rapidly transforming art world.

    Martin Myrone is Curator (18th- and 19th- century British Art) at Tate and the author of The Blake Book.

    John Martin (1789-1854) was a key figure in the nineteenth-century art world, renowned for his dramatic scenes of apocalyptic destruction and biblical disaster. While he was hugely popular, he remained something of an outsider, scorned by the art critics of his time.

    Organised in partnership with the Laing, Newcastle, this major exhibition will be the first show dedicated to his paintings for over 30 years, and the largest display of his works seen in public since his death. Bringing together his most famous paintings from collections around the world, as well as previously unseen and newly-restored works, the exhibition will reassess this singular figure in art history, and reflect on the enduring influence of his apocalyptic art on painting, cinema and popular spectacle. The show will also examine how Martin's populism fits into the story of British art, and how his work connects with the culture of today.

    This painting forms part of a triptych of 'judgement pictures' inspired by the description of the Last Judgement in the final book of the New Testament, the book of Revelation. In The Great Day of His Wrath, Martin's apocalyptic vision closely follows the Biblical account: there was a great earthquake and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair and the moon became as blood. And the heaven departed as a scroll... and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. The earth crashes in on itself, underlining the futility of mankind's attempts to resist the will of God.
