Reproduction vintage exhibition poster for Fahrelnissa Zeid’s 1961 exhibition at Gallery Dina Vierny.
The black, spiky image on the poster has a sharp, arachnid look – fitting for the aggressive note that Zeid’s work had in this period, echoing the Algerian war – yet it can also be seen as a closed eye, with the dark fringed eyelashes that her later figurative portraits would have.
Fahrelnissa Zeid (1901 – 1991) is best known for her vibrant abstract works, and stylised portraits in later life. She was born in Istanbul into an elite family of statesmen and intellectuals and later married into the Hashemite royal family of Iraq. She became one of the first female modern painters in Turkey, joining the d group – an influential group of progressive Turkish avant-garde artists. Widely travelled, Zeid exhibited her work in London, Paris, Brussels, New York and Jordan.
Dimensions: 59.4 x 42 cm. Includes a white border and the artwork credit line. Printed on Satin 250gsm paper.
