Elegant fine bone china mug featuring Sir John Everett Millais’s painting of Ophelia, 1851-2.

The scene is taken from Shakespeare’s play Hamlet in which Ophelia drowns herself after her father is murdered by her lover, Hamlet. The flowers she holds are symbolic: the poppy represents death, daisies innocence and pansies love in vain. The painting was regarded in its day as one of the most accurate and elaborate studies of nature ever made.

Sir John Everett Millais is one of the best known English Victorian painters and was a principle member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, alongside fellow painters William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
