This work recalls traditional full-length portraits of women but the clear lines and precision of the work gives it a modern feel. The model for this painting was Margaret Austin-Jones then aged twenty-three. The dress she wears was made by Frampton’s mother from a Vogue pattern. The vase next to her was designed by Frampton.

Meredith Frampton was born in in 1894 in St John’s Wood, the only son of the sculptor George Frampton and painter Christabel Cockerell. He studied at the Royal Academy from 1913 before joining the army during the First World War. After the war he resumed his artistic career, painting highly real portraits and still life, many of which had a slightly surreal touch. His artistic career was cut short as in 1953 he retired due to his failing eyesight.
