This is a print of Radiator Building - Night, New York, originally painted in 1927. It is exclusively available at Tate to accompany the Georgia O'Keeffe exhibition at Tate Modern.
O’Keeffe made many paintings of New York while living there in the 1920s and 1930s. Her eye for composition is evident in this piece, creating the atmosphere of the city at night expertly with a limited colour palette.
Considered as being a subject reserved for male artists, O’Keeffe was met with disapproval when painting city scenes and was told to ‘leave New York to the men’. On exhibiting her first painting of New York, it was the first to sell in the exhibition, to which O’Keeffe later remarked ‘from then on they let me paint New York’.
Printed on 300gsm fine art paper. 30 x 40 cm including a white border around the image.
