China mug featuring Derain’s vibrant portrayal of the Thames, The Pool of London. Created exclusively for The EY Exhibition: Impressionists In London at Tate Britain.
This view of the Thames from London Bridge is one of four works painted by Derain, showing the same part of the river. He had been sent to London by his dealer to create a fresh vision of the Thames views, as painted by Claude Monet a few years earlier. Vividly coloured and boldly painted, The Pool of London 1906 is characteristic of fauvism in creating vivid effects through bold contrasts of colour.
André Derain (1880 – 1954) was a French artist, painter, and sculptor. In 1898, while studying to be an engineer at the Académie Camillo, Derain met Henri Matisse at a painting class taught by Eugène Carrière. Together, Derain and Matisse co-founded Fauvism – a movement characterised by the bold, unnaturally bright colours that the critic Louis Vauxcelles derided as the work of ‘wild beasts’ (les Fauves).
