Several of the French impressionists shared an interest in the new engineering structures of the Thames, which resulted in a collection paintings inspired by the iron- lattice work of several of the London Bridges. The Bridge at Hampton Court, Mitre Inn depicts a scene of summer leisure, with teams of rowers and couples strolling, yet the bridge is one of the most-clearly defined presences in the painting. The choice to emphasise a modern structure over the tudor architecture in the background of the scene sat at odds with British Victorian tastes.
Alfred Sisley (1839 – 1899) was one of the most consistent Impressionist painters. Born in Paris to Anglo- French parents, he was sent to London to train for the family business, but decided upon a career in painting in 1862. In 1863 he entered Gleyre's studio in Paris and met Monet, Renoir and Bazille, whose friendship had an enormous impact on this life and work. Sisley’s work was shown in four of the eight Impressionist exhibitions held between 1874 and 1886.
