Mini print of Tissot’s The Gallery of HMS Calcutta, c.1876. As well as a high quality reproduction of the image, our mini prints feature a white border and the image title.
Tissot’s painting explores themes of Victorian societal propriety and convention. A naval officer flirts with a young lady, who conceals her enjoyment behind a fan. A chaperone stands between the two, but the man’s gaze is undeterred. Tissot was criticised for these elements, as well as the languid pose and hour- glass figure of the woman, and the author Henry James denounced the painting as ‘hard, vulgar and banal’.
James Tissot (1836 – 1902) was a French painter who moved to London in 19871, after fighting in the Franco- Prussian war as part of the Paris Commune. He quickly developed a reputation for painting scenes from fashionable society, featuring elegantly dressed women. During his time in London he was close to many artists from the Impressionist movement, and Thames scenes in particular were influenced by Whistler.
