John Hoyland (12 October 1934 – 31 July 2011)was one of Britain’s leading exponents of abstract painting. Born in Sheffield in 1934 he studied at the Sheffield School of Art (1951-1956) and the Royal Academy (1956-1960).
His career was decisively influenced by his experience of American Abstract Expressionism, first encountered in ‘Modern Art in the United States’ at Tate Britain, London. He went on to travel frequently to the United States where he enjoyed the company of such artists as Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell and Larry Poons.
His work experimented with the notions of colour and form, often on a large scale. In his later years he went on to explore the three-dimensional quality of acrylic paint, introducing thick-layered and textured elements to his work.
Hoyland has been the subject of numerous major exhibitions, including retrospectives at the Serpentine Gallery, London (1979–80); the Royal Academy of Arts, London (1999); and Tate St Ives (2006).
