Paper size: 68 x 50 cm
Edition of 65, signed and numbered by the artist.
This stunning limited edition has been specially commissioned to accompany the 2013 survey of Gary Hume's work at Tate Britain.
Gary Hume emerged as one of the leading figures of the group of young artists working in London in the 1990s. Hume’s early work is characterised by glossy, populist imagery and defined a zeitgeist at a time when the art scene was becoming increasingly professionalised and implicated with the popular media. An early series of works, displayed as groups of four were based on hospital doors and created using gloss on panel. These works had an international appeal but, despite their success, Hume abandoned the formal manoeuvring of the door series in the early 1990s in favour of a simple, flatly coloured representational style drawing on a broad pool of popular and prosaic subject matter.
Hume uses figurative subject matter in a self admittedly superficial way, through which he explores preoccupation with structure, surface and colour. During the mid nineties Hume began to focus primarily on flora, fauna and portraiture and was accompanied in a change of working surface from panel to aluminium.
Hume was shortlisted for the Turner prize in 1996 and represented Britain at the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999. He graduated from Goldsmith’s College in 1988.
