Lithograph of Malevich’s painting 'Peasant in the Fields' (c1929), printed by Atelier Mourlot, the famed Parisian printers noted for their close collaboration with artists. They have worked closely with Matisse, Picasso and Miro in creating exhibition publicity posters and reproductions.
This lithograph print was commissioned by the Pitzer gallery, a Paris gallery, in 1992 with permission of the Russian State Museum of Leningrad. The lithographs were printed from the paintings so the reproduction is close to the original and were printed with the excellent colour and detail that Mourlot are noted for.
Russian-born Kazimir Malevich (1879–1935) was Russia’s most influential avant-garde artist, a key figure in a succession of art movements in the early twentieth century. His style of severe geometric abstraction, which he called Suprematism, was a precursor to the development of constructivism.
'Peasant in the Fields' was painted in the late 1920s. At this time Malevich had just started painting again. His new works blended figuration and abstraction, applying the lessons learnt from Suprematism. Russia was soon to enter a time of brutal collectivism, persecutions and grain requisitions. The political context of the time plays a part in this painting as the inert, faceless figure against a pared down landscape convey a sense of dislocation, alienation and despair.
Each print has an embossed Mourlot stamp. 54.5 cm x 75.7 cm
