Atelier Mourlot Malevich Portrait of a Female (1992 lithograph)

Lithograph of Malevich’s painting 'Portrait of a Female' (1928 – 32), printed by Atelier Mourlot, the famed Parisian printers noted for their close collaboration with artists. They have worked closely with Matisse, Picasso and Miro in creating exhibition publicity posters and reproductions.

This lithograph print was commissioned by the Pitzer gallery, a Paris gallery, in 1992 with permission of the Russian State Museum of Leningrad. The lithographs were printed from the paintings so the reproduction is close to the original and were printed with the excellent colour and detail that Mourlot are noted for.

Russian-born Kazimir Malevich (1879–1935) was Russia’s most influential avant-garde artist, a key figure in a succession of art movements in the early twentieth century. His style of severe geometric abstraction, which he called Suprematism, was a precursor to the development of constructivism. 'Portrait of a Female' was painted in 1928 – 1932. At this time Malevich had just started painting again. His new works blended figuration and abstraction, applying to the lessons learnt from Suprematism.
