Coming just 18 months after the completion of his decoration for the Chapel of the Rosary, Venice, the catalogue notes that this exhibition came at a time when Matisse was virtually unknown as a sculptor making the show particularly important.
It brought together almost the entire oeuvre of Matisse’s sculpture including successive stages of three sculptures; Madeline 1901-03, Reclining Nude 1907-29 and Head of Jeanette 1910-11 along with variations and studies for six paintings and drawings. In total 48 of Matisse’s sculptures were on show.
