Poster of Monet’s Houses of Parliament, Effect of Sunlight in the Fog 1904, printed on fine art paper to ensure a high quality reproduction.
London’s fog held a particular fascination for Monet, and it features heavily in each of The Houses of Parliament series of paintings. They were all painted from the same viewpoint, (from St Thomas’ Hospital, looking across the river) during different times of day to capture the light and mist. Though initially captured in-situ, Monet continued to refine them when he returned to Paris. He wrote to his dealer Durand-Ruel: 'I cannot send you a single canvas of London ... It is indispensable to have them all before me, and to tell the truth not one is definitely finished. I develop them all together.'
Oscar-Claude Monet was a founder of French Impressionist painting. The term 'Impressionism' is derived from the title of his painting Impression, soleil levant. Monet’s Impressionist work is characterised in terms of colours and shapes rather than scenes and objects, using bright colours in dabs and dashes, and featured the same setting painted many times to capture the changing light and seasons of the natural world.
