Exhibition print of Monet’s The Thames Below Westminster 1871. Our exhibition prints are made using our highest quality print method and paper stock, ensuring the most faithful reproduction.
Monet painted this view of the Thames when he moved to London with his wife and child during the Franco-Prussian war to avoid conscription. A view of the river and Embankment looking towards the Houses of Parliament, Monet captures the way that the light diffuses through the spring mist, bringing a sense of calm to the busy river scene.
Oscar-Claude Monet was a founder of French Impressionist painting. The term 'Impressionism' is derived from the title of his painting Impression, soleil levant. Monet’s Impressionist work is characterised in terms of colours and shapes rather than scenes and objects, using bright colours in dabs and dashes, and featured the same setting painted many times to capture the changing light and seasons of the natural world.
