About the artwork
In 1940, Moore became an Official War Artist and began sketching people during London air raids. This drawing shows two sleepers, sheltering from an air raid in the London Underground. Critics have argued that the strange mute colours and scratchy lines of the figures recall earth materials such as stone and coal, drawing a comparison with the resolute determination of Londoners to work and sleep through raids to the indomitable nature of stone.

About the artist
Renowned British artist Henry Moore was born in July 1898 in Castleford, Yorkshire. His most prominent work was his distinctive sculptures in stone, wood and bronze, but he was also an accomplished draughtsman. Moore took inspiration from the human figure, which he depicted in a distinct style. This style drew upon diverse cultural and artistic influences and echoed the English landscape tradition. Moore died in Hertfordshire in 1986.
