Original: Oil paint on canvas, 41.9 x 73.7 cm Tate. Purchased 1939 © Tate

Nash produced this painting of a small blue house improbably situated on a sandy beach following a trip to the south of France in 1930. It demonstrates his increasing interest in surrealism around this time, in particular the influence of Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico whose dreamlike architecture and unreal perspectives are reflected in the mysterious imagery of Blue House on the Shore.

          Artist details

Paul Nash was fascinated with Britainís ancient past and spent time in southern England exploring the downs and coastal areas. Equally inspired by the equinox and the phases of the moon, he used all these influences in his work, interpreting his environment according to a unique, personal mythology, evolving throughout his career.
