Painted in 1928, the year of Giorgio de Chirico’s first London exhibition, Lares shows the influence surrealism was beginning to exert on the artist. Nash admired the Italian artist’s use of architectural elements and multiple overlapping planes to create magical, dreamlike scenes. The title refers to the Roman deities associated with the home and the fireplace is based on the one in Nash’s own home.
