Following a nervous breakdown in 1921, which was attributed to his experiences during the First World War, Nash and his wife moved to rural Sussex where this this landscape was completed. Full of drama and movement, the scene – of trees and bushes being lashed by a gale – conveys a sense of vulnerability and menace.
