Nash was a passionate champion of modernism, and played a key role in shaping the movement in Britain. Voyages of the Moon reflects his experiments with both surrealism and abstraction during the 1930s. Inspired by the globe ceiling lamps reflected in the mirrored walls of a restaurant in Toulon, France, the painting’s abstract geometric shapes create a strange, dreamlike interior.
