In this painting, Pissarro depicts the iconic landmarks of the Houses of Parliament, Cleopatra’s needle, and even Charing Cross Bridge itself as background and secondary details in comparison to the vast, clouded sky and the sunlight illuminating the river’s surface. The scale of the landmarks in comparison with these natural elements gives the painting a panoramic feel.

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was a Danish-French Impressionist painter, and later mentor of Cézanne and Gauguin. He moved to London briefly during the Franco- Prussian war, and returned to visit several times in the 1890s. A pivotal figure in the Impressionist movement, Pissarro was the only artist to have shown his work at all eight Paris Impressionist exhibitions, from 1874 to 1886.
