In this painting, Pissarro demonstates his interest in suburbia as a mix between the rural and the urban, and how they sit together. The railway’s purpose was to link Dulwich village and the surrounding areas to London, transforming and modernising the villages. This is also the first Impressionist painting with a train as a focal point; trains later became significant to the movement and its interest in modernity.

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was a Danish-French Impressionist painter, and later mentor of Cézanne and Gauguin. He moved to London briefly during the Franco- Prussian war, and returned to visit several times in the 1890s. A pivotal figure in the Impressionist movement, Pissarro was the only artist to have shown his work at all eight Paris Impressionist exhibitions, from 1874 to 1886.
