Poster reproduction of Join the Red Cavalry! 1920 by V. Silkin, available to coincide with the Red Star Over Russia exhibition at Tate Modern.
Join the Red Cavalry! was a recruitment poster published in Ukrainian from Kiev in 1920. The text reads: “The Red Cavalry fought against Mamontov, Shkuro, Denikin. They fought against Pans and Petlyura. Now it’s Wrangel’s turn. Workers and Peasants – Join the Red Cavalry.”
The distinctive helmet of the Red Cavalry, known as the “budenovka”, is named after Semyon Budenny, the Red First Cavalry commander. Designed in 1918, the helmet wsa originally called the “bogatyrka”, its inspiration coming from Viktor Vasnetov’s famous painting of 1998, “The Boagtyr’s” in which three legendary warriors are depicted on horseback, defending ancient Russian soil and wearing metal armoured head- dress of a similar design.
