This is one of a series of eight screenprints that Bayer completed in 1970 exploring the relationship between colour and form. The series reflects Bayer’s continued commitment to the colour theory of the Bauhaus. In this print two concentric circles intersect, generating a new colour that forms a neutral space in the centre of the composition.

          Artist details

Herbert Bayer was a graphic designer, painter, sculptor and architect closely associated with the Bauhaus. Born in 1900 in Linz, Austria, he moved to Weimar in Germany to study at the Bauhaus under Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and László Moholy-Nagy, later becoming director of printing and advertising at the school. After leaving to become art director of Berlin Vogue, he emigrated to America in 1938 where he designed and curated two Bauhaus exhibitions. His work became more varied during this period, including architecture projects, typographic design, large scale sculpture and creative consultancy.
