          Screenprint on paper 44.5 x 44.8 cm © DACS, 2015

This silkscreen on foiled paper was completed in 1969, while Bayer was living and working in America. The expressive colour and simplified forms of this composition show his continuing commitment to Bauhaus design principles. The considered use of colour reflects the theories of Bayer’s teacher at the Bauhaus, Wassily Kandinsky – in particular that blue corresponds to circular shapes.

          Artist details

Herbert Bayer was a graphic designer, painter, sculptor and architect closely associated with the Bauhaus. Born in 1900 in Linz, Austria, he moved to Weimar in Germany to study at the Bauhaus under Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and László Moholy-Nagy, later becoming director of printing and advertising at the school. After leaving to become art director of Berlin Vogue, he emigrated to America in 1938 where he designed and curated two Bauhaus exhibitions. His work became more varied during this period, including architecture projects, typographic design, large scale sculpture and creative consultancy.
