Brown's picture shows a boat of emigrants as they pass the most westerly cliffs of southern England. Beneath her shawl the woman cradles a small baby, whose tiny hand is just visible, grasping its mother's hand.

          Artist details

English painter Ford Madox Brown trained in Belgium and painted in an ‘early Christian’ style. In 1848 he was introduced to the Pre-Raphaelite circle by Rossetti and their influence caused him to paint more landscape works with a wider palette. In 1865 Brown held a successful and pioneering solo exhibition but only had a small income. In 1878 he was commissioned to paint historical pictures for Manchester Town Hall which occupied him until 1893.
