Carrington's painting depicts Watendlath Farm and barn, near Keswick in the Lake District, where newly-wed Carrington spent a summer holiday with her husband in 1921. The dark green hills and fields dwarf the figures in front.

          Artist details

English painter and decorative artist, Dora Carrington trained at the Slade where she met John Nash and Mark Gertler, who both influenced her work. As a painter she is uneven, at times awkward, at others bringing poetic vehemence to her well-constructed image. Although closely involved with the Bloomsbury Set, her work is aligned more with her Slade contemporaries.
