          Artist details

An English painter, printmaker, collector and teacher, John Crome was the son of a journeyman weaver. He was first apprenticed to a coach and sign painter and later consolidated his artistic training. Like many of his contemporaries, Crome established a practice as a drawing-master. Crome was credited his role as a founder of the Norwich school of painters. He visited Wales and the Lake District and his one trip abroad took place in 1814, when he visited the art collections brought to Paris by Napoleon.
