          A busy crowded leisure scene illustrating Brighton in Sussex on a bank holiday. Markets and parades are seen from a point overlooking the bandstand on the end of the main promenade east of the pier, which can be seen in the left background.

          Artist details

          British painter Charles Cundall was known for his topographical subjects and townscapes. He studied at the Manchester School of Art, obtaining a scholarship to the R.C.A. 1912. He became an official War Artist with the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force 1940–5.
