Derain’s view of the Thames from London Bridge is one of four works showing the same part of the river, having been sent to London with the purpose of creating a fresh vision of the Thames views, as painted by Monet a few years earlier. Vividly coloured and boldly painted, The Pool of London 1906 is characteristic of fauvism in creating vivid effects through bold contrasts of colour.
