Gore's landscapes have a bright, unrealistic palette and arranged shapes into geometric patterns. 'The Beanfield' is notable for the zig-zag border of the coloured bean plants in the foreground.

          Artist details

British painter Spencer Gore studied at Slade School of Art in 1896-9. He was later a pupil of Sickert and became influenced by French art, in particular Degas. With Gilman and others he helped found the Allied Artists’ Association and was also involved in the formation of the Camden town group in 1911, a group associated with Impressionist technique. He was the first to break away from this however, and soon favoured pattern-making in his paintings and was greatly influenced by Cézanne.
