Presented by Miss D. Noyes and Miss E. Noyes 1950

During the 1920s Nicholson and his first wife Winifred lived in a house in Cumberland. They both painted with the intention of escaping the academic style of art. Painting mostly landscapes, they developed a naïve style that can be seen in this piece, with the thick brush strokes and limited use of colour.
