Oil paint on canvas. Purchased in 1955

This image is a perfect example of Nicholsonís regular practice of combining a pale, grey background with contrasting, vibrant colours. The bright patches of red, yellow and blue become focus points. This use of colour is comparable to the grid- like abstracts of Mondrian, whom Nicholson greatly admired.
