          Artist details

A British painter and printmaker of Portuguese birth, Paula Rego trained at the Slade where she met her future husband, the painter Victor Willing . They divided their time between Portugal and England until 1975. She first won acclaim in Portugal with semi-abstract paintings that sometimes included collage; the satiric wit and verve of line revealed gifts for story- telling. In 1976 they returned to London and Rego’s later works included a move from collage to drawing directly in acrylic on paper.
