          Artist details

John Singer Sargent was born in Florence, the only son of an American surgeon. His childhood was spent touring Europe, before entering the Paris studio of Carolus-Duran in 1874. He later settled in London, but remained an American citizen and was a founding member of the New English Art Club. Sargent's international reputation as a portraitist reached its peak in the 1890s and early 1900s, but by 1910 he had given up all but the occasional portrait, devoting himself mainly to landscapes.
