Painted in 1970, Black Pan, Beige Cup on Brown followed the end of William Scott’s second period of painting pure abstracts. In this painting he has reverted back to painting with his style of flattening the forms. He has added some depth to the piece by adding shade to the mug although he has left the pan with a very flat look.

          Artist details

Born 1913 to Scottish-Irish parents, William Scott is the most internationally celebrated 20th century painter from Ulster, Northern Ireland. Scott is best known for his abstract and still-life paintings of simple kitchen objects. He strayed from these forms several times throughout his life but with little success. While serving in the army he made a number of watercolours of soldiers and the landscape, but when the war ended he returned to painting still lifes in ernest.
